Red Light Therapy.
Photobiomodulation for recovery after cancer treatment, scar tissue and pain relief
Photobiomodulation (PBM), sometimes known as Red Light Therapy or Low-Level Light Therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular energy production and support the body’s natural repair processes.
These therapeutic wavelengths are absorbed by structures within the cell called mitochondria. This helps improve ATP (cellular energy) production, modulate inflammation, enhance microcirculation, and support tissue regeneration.
PBM has been studied across a range of clinical settings including wound healing, musculoskeletal pain, scar tissue management, inflammation, and recovery after medical treatment.
Treatments are delivered using a professional-grade photobiomodulation device, selected for consistent therapeutic wavelengths, treatment power, and high treatment standards.
Areas Where Photobiomodulation May Help:
Post-Radiotherapy Fibrosis
Radiotherapy can sometimes lead to long-term tissue tightness, fibrosis, discomfort, and reduced mobility. Photobiomodulation may help support tissue quality, circulation, comfort, and movement when used appropriately as part of a wider rehabilitation approach.
Surgical Scars & Soft Tissue Recovery
Including:
Axillary scars
Lumpectomy scars
Mastectomy scars
Adhesions / tissue tightness
Sensitivity or discomfort around healed scars
PBM may help support scar remodelling, tissue pliability, circulation, and comfort.
Joint Pain & Inflammation
Photobiomodulation is commonly used for joint discomfort, stiffness, overuse injuries, and inflammatory irritation. It may help reduce pain and improve mobility.
What the treatment involves
A course of 6 sessions will be booked over the course of 3 or 6 weeks - either twice a week for 3 weeks or once a week for 6 weeks.
Red light therapy is effective as a course of treatments as the benefits are cumulative, so this would not be a one off treatment, The red light therapy will be integrated within a scar massage or lymphatic drainage session depending on your needs. Each session is tailored to the individual and may include:
Assessment of symptoms and goals
Targeted light application to the treatment area
Comfortable, relaxing treatment setting
Advice on integrating therapy into a wider recovery plan
Important Clinical Note
Photobiomodulation is a complementary therapy designed to support recovery, comfort, and function. It is not a replacement for oncology care, medical treatment, or consultant follow-up.
Where appropriate, treatment can be coordinated sensitively alongside your existing healthcare plan.
